It was first proclaimed on November 21, 2021, in memorial of the One Piece anime episode 1000’s release. For the celebration of the 25th anniversary of One Piece manga and released on August 6, 2022, in Japan.

The film grossed over ¥19.70 billion in Japan. aking it the highest-grossing One Piece film, the highest-grossing film by Toei Animation. The highest-grossing film of 2022 in Japan. And the fifth highest-grossing anime film of all time. In Japan, it is the fifth highest-grossing  Japanese film of all time. And the eighth highest-grossing film in Japan. The film has topped Japan’s box office for eleven consecutive weeks. A feat accomplished by only three Japanese films. As of Jan 29, the film has grossed US$246.5 million worldwide. Making it the fourth-highest-grossing anime film of all time. And the fourth-highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.

 

Plot

The Straw Hat Pirates travel to Elygia Island to attend a concert by world-famous singer Utah. After Utah sings her first song, Luffy takes the stage to reunite with her. Revealing that the two know each other because of Utah. Is the adopted daughter of “Red-Haired” Shanks. They met 12 years ago when Shanks was in Luffy’s hometown. But one day he returned from a trip without her, saying that she had left to pursue a singing career.
 
A group of pirates tries to kidnap Utah, but she subdues them by imagining what she wants through music. Uta then tells Luffy that he should stop being a pirate. Because he will make this show last forever and create a world filled with only happiness and peace. When the Straw Hats oppose the idea, Utah attacks and arrests everyone except Luffy. Who remains rescued by Trafalgar Law and Bartolomeo. Meanwhile, the Five Elders who rule the World Government see Utah’s power as a major threat to the world. And Navy Admiral Akainu orders a fleet of warships led by Admiral Kizaru. And Fujitora to go to Eligia and capture it.

Production

Development

Gorō Taniguchi before appeared in the 1998 OVA One Piece: Defeat The Pirate Ganzak! Directed by I, it stood produced by Production I.G. It was the first anime. Adaptation of the One Piece manga, released before the anime series aired. And had a limited showing in Japanese theaters. Oda said Taniguchi was “the first person to animate Luffy”. After the film’s first announcement in November 2021. Taniguchi said he wanted to reveal the never-before-seen One Piece and show it in One Piece Film: Red.
 
According to Shinji Shimizu, the producer of One Piece Anime at Doi Animation. One Piece Film: Red is the One Piece film that Eiichiro Oda was most involved in creating. Oda is the film’s executive producer, character designer, and screenplay critic. He also said that the film will be different from the previous One Piece films, as the animation will be in 2D. But some scenes will remain influenced by 3D CGI.
 
The film’s script stood developed over two years by Oda, Taniguchi, and Tsutomu Kuroiwa. After finishing, Oda praised the final script, saying, “It’s amazing!”. Screenwriter Sudomu Kuroiwa promises that One Piece Film: Red Showtimes. Will be a great movie that will touch many hearts.

Finding the One Piece movies is an expedition that rivals finding the One Piece itself. While every anime episode is available on Crunchyroll. (with many also streaming on Netflix and Hulu). You’d think the films would be streaming beside the anime. That, unfortunately, is not the case, and it looks like the same goes for the latest entry. One Piece Film: Red is not currently streaming on any platform. But the film is available for Digital buying. And rent via VUDU, Microsoft, and iTunes. The film’s digital release was on March 28 in the United States. Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Mexico, and Brazil.

The film grossed $12.7 million in North America and another $149.7 million worldwide. For a combined worldwide gross of $162.4 million. Box Office Mojo reports the film grossed $151.6 million in Japan alone.
 
The film would top Toei Animation’s previous top-grosser in Dragon Ball Super. By a whopping $40 million. That film grossed $122.7 million globally. Albeit with a much more significant North American box office of $30.3 million.
